WELCOME TO 'SHE WOLVES' HOCKEY
If you're looking for girls/ladies hockey, you've certainly come to the right place! The new She Wolves Hockey Program is a brand new hockey initiative here at the Ice Den designed just for females looking to enhance their game, meet new friends and have a great time both on and off the ice.
Stephani Bernier (BURN-yay) has been hired as the She Wolves Program Coordinator and is looking forward to building a solid program that appeals to both girls and women players. The She Wolves program begins this fall with a very basic 6-session program (2- sessions per month from Oct – Dec). The purpose of this program is purely developmental. Each class will be hosted on a Sunday and will have both an off-ice and an on-ice component. The goal is to use the fall program as a building block for a winter program starting in January that will hopefully become a weekly program once the 3rd ice sheet at the Ice Den is complete. There will also be opportunities for all-girls hockey camps and clinics here at the Ice Den as well.
While the immediate focus is hockey development for existing players, Stephani will also be launching initiatives designed to get new girls/ladies into the sport. As numbers grow, the She Wolves program will eventually evolve into girls and ladies teams who will participate against other local girls teams and participate in girls tournaments.

LADIES HOCKEY HISTORY
Ladies hockey dates back to the 1890s and was started in Ottawa, Ontario. Lord Stanley's daughter Isobel Stanley was amongst the beginning pioneers of ladies hockey. Back in those days, Ladies wore long skirts that hung all the way down to their ankles. During the 1900's, when the ladies fell on the ice, the male ref's were inclined to help the women up.
Over the years there were many ups and downs in ladies hockey. During the Depression and through the World Wars, the popularity of ladies hockey declined.Although there were teams that flourished during those years, the popularity didn't really start booming again until the 1960's. Teams were forming not only in North America but Asia and Europe as well.
By the 1990's , Women's hockey became more popular at higher levels. All around the world, women were playing at a higher calibre than ever before. In the 90's heroes such as Cammi Granato and Manon Rheume were influential and inspirational for women in the hockey sector. Manon Rheume became the first woman to play as a goalie in an NHL exhibition game.
Today ladies hockey has spread like wildfire. World wide women and girls are competing at all levels. From the trailblazers on the frozen ponds over 120 years ago to the women warriors today, ladies hockey has set the hockey world on fire.
